USD/JPY Rises as US Treasury Yields Hit 19-Month High Amid Fed Rate Hike Bets

The US Dollar (USD) strengthened against the Japanese Yen (JPY), rising 0.15% to near 160.00 during the European trading session on Tuesday, as the Greenback outperformed major currencies amid surging US Treasury yields and ongoing fiscal concerns. The US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the USD against six major currencies, climbed 0.2% to approximately 99.60, reflecting broad-based USD strength. Notably, 10-year US Treasury yields reached a fresh 19-month high at 4.78%, approaching a multi-year peak of 4.81% [1].

According to a table of percentage changes, the USD was the strongest against the New Zealand Dollar, with a 0.37% gain, and also posted gains against the Japanese Yen (0.10%), Euro (0.18%), and other major currencies [1]. The heat map further illustrates the USD's outperformance across the board [1].

Strategists at BNY Markets noted that, while Fed Chair Kevin Warsh did not provide explicit forward guidance in his Jackson Hole address, he came close to advocating for a rate hike. The market is now pricing in an almost two-thirds probability of a rate hike at the FOMC's September 16 meeting. Futures markets also anticipate at least one additional hike into early 2027, with a total of about two-and-a-half hikes currently priced in [1].

The rate repricing has led to a notable selloff at the long end of the US Treasury curve, with both 10-year and 30-year yields moving significantly higher since Friday. This development contradicts the expectation that a more hawkish Fed would enhance credibility and bring yields lower, instead reinforcing concerns over fiscal policy and the Fed's credibility [1].

CONCLUSION

The USD/JPY pair's rise is driven by surging US Treasury yields and increased expectations of further Fed rate hikes. Market participants are closely watching the FOMC's upcoming decision, with the current environment reflecting heightened fiscal concerns and questions about the Fed's credibility. The strong USD performance and higher yields signal significant market impact and ongoing volatility.
