China's electric vehicle (EV) market is witnessing a significant shift as the ongoing price war among automakers transforms into a 'feature war' centered on artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. Over 50 car brands have adopted ByteDance's Doubao AI model, which is now integrated into 145 car models and more than 7 million vehicles, according to Volcano Engine, ByteDance's cloud platform. This widespread adoption includes not only domestic brands but also foreign-branded models such as the all-electric Mercedes-Benz GLC, SAIC Audi E7X, and SAIC Volkswagen ID. ERA 9X [1].

The Beijing auto show highlighted this trend, with Volcano Engine showcasing both Chinese-language and English-language AI systems for cars. The Doubao AI chatbot, which boasts over 155 million weekly active users as of early this year, is the most widely used AI chatbot in China, according to consultancy Chozan [1]. Automakers are leveraging these AI features to meet consumer demand for connected experiences, such as Huawei-smartphone-compatible interfaces and advanced voice assistants [1].

Despite the rapid integration of new AI features, automakers continue to face intense sales pressure due to persistent overcapacity. Fermín Soneira, CEO of the Audi and SAIC Cooperation Project, stated that the price war is unlikely to end soon, emphasizing the industry's ability to quickly deploy technology updates remotely, or 'over-the-air' [1]. Stephen Dyer, partner and managing director at AlixPartners, noted that the competition has shifted from battery range to cockpit technology, but much of this technology quickly becomes commoditized, making it difficult for companies to maintain a competitive edge [1].

Among the top 20 best-selling electric car models in China priced at 100,000 yuan ($14,645) or above, driver-assist and in-car entertainment functions are largely similar. Dyer predicts that Chinese automakers may soon focus on differentiating through 'outside-of-the-car experiences,' such as exclusive lifestyle offerings, as seen with Nio's customer clubhouses and premium interior features [1].

CONCLUSION

China's EV market is rapidly shifting from a price-driven competition to an AI-powered feature race, with major technology firms like ByteDance playing a central role. While automakers are racing to integrate advanced AI features, the commoditization of technology is pushing companies to seek new ways to differentiate, potentially through unique customer experiences. The market remains highly competitive, with no immediate end to the price war in sight.
