Thai Baht Expected to Consolidate as Bank of Thailand Holds Rates Steady

Commerzbank FX Analyst Charlie Lay reports that the Thai Baht (THB) has strengthened against the US Dollar (USD), with the USD/THB exchange rate easing from around 33.90 in late July to approximately 32.70. This movement has been attributed to a softer US Dollar. The Bank of Thailand (BoT) attributes recent volatility in the baht primarily to risks stemming from the Middle East and shifting expectations regarding US Federal Reserve policy [1].

The BoT maintained its benchmark one-day repurchase rate at 1.00% for the third consecutive meeting, with the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voting unanimously (7-0) to keep rates unchanged. The central bank continues to maintain an accommodative policy stance and appears comfortable holding rates steady for an extended period, potentially up to the first half of 2027. Commerzbank expects the BoT to remain on hold for the rest of 2026, citing that the current policy setting is sufficient to support economic growth while keeping inflation expectations anchored [1].

Despite the accommodative bias, the BoT has emphasized that rate cuts are not warranted under current conditions and noted that the effectiveness of monetary policy transmission is diminishing. The central bank also indicated that, given Thailand's still-fragile domestic recovery, excessive appreciation of the baht would be undesirable. However, the MPC did not signal any imminent policy shift in response to currency movements. Commerzbank forecasts near-term consolidation in the USD/THB pair within the 32.50–33.00 range [1].

CONCLUSION

The Bank of Thailand's decision to keep rates unchanged and maintain an accommodative stance is expected to support the baht's consolidation against the US dollar. With no immediate policy shifts anticipated and the central bank comfortable with current settings, market participants can expect USD/THB to remain within a defined range in the near term.
